The Impact Of Dragons On
East Asian Folklore

Abstract

The goal of this website project is to analyze how dragons are featured in East Asian folklore, what rituals developed in response to this depiction, and how these rituals are performed in daily life.  While mainly focusing on China, other countries (like Japan and Vietnam) will also be discussed.  Please note that across all East Asian cultures, dragons are not treated as a monolith and fulfill different roles across various stories, rituals, and customs.  Therefore, this analysis will not force the idea of a dragon into a single category, instead viewing how these different roles influence its perception by others.
